Somebody told me that I cant wear belly shirts because I have an insulin pump. Uh.
This insulin pump right here? Its small. Pink. It has a tube running out of it that connects to my stomach. Weird, right?
Wanna know something about this insulin pump? Its saving my life everyday. It gives me the insulin my body no longer produces. Your body produces it, so you dont have to wear one.
Without this insulin pump, I have to take 6 shots a day in my stomach You think getting a flu shot once a year is bad? try injecting your own needles six times a day, everyday.
When I was doing shots, i gave up. I hated them. They hurt. So I stopped doing them completely. My body had none of the insulin that everyone elses body had. Within two days I woke up puking. I puked all day until I couldnt walk anymore and could hardly breathe. My mom rushed me to the hospital, where I was transferred to the ICU. If I wouldnt have gone to the hospital by the time the night was over, the ketones produced by my lack of insulin would have swollen my brain and killed me.
That was two days without insulin.
Now, I have a machine that delivers it constantly. I have a life support system on my hip. If I want to wear a cropped shirt that shows off the machine that gave me a second chance- Then you can bet your bottom dollar i will show it to the world.
Yes, I have diabetes. And it doesnt define me.
